techplayer, The spinoffs are dividends. Why would you wait until the spinoffs are completed? An investor invests for the stream of dividends into the indefinite future. If a company doesn't pay dividends like Microsoft an investor is still looking to a payout of dividends at some future date as a lump sum or some stream of payments. Sometimes dividends come in the form of a spinoff. You can look at the spinoff of Avaya and MicroElec. as lump sum dividends equal to the present value of them if received over the indefinite future.
