Nice Post - I agree I think one of Vans greatest assets is its brand name that they have built over twenty plus years - Unlike athletic shoes, sneaker makers cannot just make a competing product and get the attention of the alternative consumers ( Nike makes shoes of Vans style but they do not sell well because kids do not want to be associated with mainstream company like Nike) I think the apparel side of their business could be huge because of their great brand name. I got a letter from Walter Shoenfeld ( Chairman ) yesterday and although he was disapointed in the stock performance he felt confident that as they continue to grow the business that proper valuation would be achieved. He did mention a new venture in Mexico and also that the recently aquired UK distributor was exceeding sales goals - He brought that info up after I wrote him a letter questioning the SOES trading on the nasdaq and also inquiring about a stock buyback. I think what you should look at is whether you want to pay a 50 P/E for big caps like MSFT or a 10 P/E for a company like Vans that has been consistently growing at 30% +.
