As I understand it the Athlon x86 core is implemented as microcode on top of a small fast risc core. (Apologies for my laymans terminology here)

The fundamental concept you present of the RISC core is correct, but the interface is undoubtably more of a translator than microcode.

The reason that I am incredulous about Sledge in December is that AMD has clearly stated that it is a 2001 product. Every attempt this thread has made to maintain rumors to the contrary of AMD's schedule have proven incorrect.
