ROUND ROCK, Tex.--DuPont Photomasks Inc. here today posted a 26% increase in sales to a record $93.4 million in its fiscal quarter, ended June 30, compared to $74.0 million last year. The supplier of lithography photomasks said its net income for the fiscal quarter was $8.1 million vs. $6.4 million in the period last year.

"Demand for photomasks is improving as the photomask cycle typically lags both the semiconductor and semiconductor capital industries by four to eight quarters," said Peter Kirlin, chairman and chief executive officer of DPI. "As such, our industry is still in the early stages of accelerating growth."

DPI's earnings of $0.49 per diluted share in the second quarter beat Wall Street's consensus of $0.45 per share, based on a survey by First Call/Thomson Financial.

For the entire fiscal 2000 year, DPI reported record sales of $328.1 million, an increase of 24% from $260.0 million. The company's net income for the year was $26.1 million, or $1.61 per diluted shares, compared to $17.3 million, or $1.09 per share, in the fiscal 1999 period.

"Demand for advanced photomask products continued to grow," said Gerd Stoecker, executive vice president of finance and chief financial officer DPI. "Fourth quarter revenues from 0.25-micron and below product accounted for 50% of our total, and nearly 25% was from 0.18-micron and below."
