The problem with these figures is that the sanctions are not the only variable that can account for the difference. During and immediately after the Gulf war, many Iraqis that were opposed to Saddam came out of the closet, mistakenly believing that the US would push the campaign into Iraq and remove him. When the war ended, Saddam commenced a brutal crackdown in these areas. How do you differentiate between deaths caused by the sanctions and deaths caused by Saddam's repression?
