To wit: ATHM consumes part of RR and eliminates its only cable modem competition at the same time? Nope. RR will continue as an independent competitor of ATHM. ATHM will get some of the subs released under the UMG merger, but individuals are free to choose either RR or ATHM if they were taking RR previously under UMG. Wouldn't ATHM have to purchase part of RR No. ATHM is not in the MSO or last mile business except as the face of that part of the distribution. ATHM is a top end carrier and a bottom end presenter, so there is no reason for it to attempt what would be blocked by Att. Att would block it because that action would imply violation of the 25% or 30% max subs rule imposed by the FCC as part of the deal structure in Att's purchase of ATHM. which it won't be allowed to do becasue that would put it back into the hands of ATT which is being forced to sell it. Not for that reason, but for the reason given above. Att is not exactly being forced to sell RR. The issue is the accumulation of too much market which would run afoul of anti-competitive excess aggregation. Or will RR just be allowed to drift and slowly bleed away its customers to others? That isn't an accurate characterization of what is happening with RR. Somehow, I think RR will be spun off on its own. Well, if you believe that Att would spin ATHM, then you could believe that too. I thought Att would do that some time ago and they probably regret not having done it, but it's too late now. They may yet do it in the far future. That is, if ATHM doesn't end up buying out Att first. The other joint owners in RR wouldn't let it go. But then why would my FAQ state that service owuld be uninterrupted under a "new brand name"? Because Att is the new MSO and they must provide choice to RR subscribers.
