Mike,

This is redundant but IMO the issue is over the enabling technology versus its application. AOL has licensed the enabling technology and it is probable that they will design their own application and promote fully owned media properties instead of Liberty Media/News Corp (TV Guide), NBC, CNBC & MSNBC (GuidePlus) or the Disney properties (Americast). Gemstar has licensed openly and it is the various applications of its technology that will compete. This is why they list MS, AOL and others as partners and competitors.

In any event, as Henry has clearly stated, any guide that AOL Time Warner uses will still be revenue bearing for Gemstar. Time Warner is seeking some allowance for signal carriage to IPGs via the VBI until the analog world has past. The FCC has mandated that digital signal carriage for IPGs will be at least 12 hours per day. Since the data is stored locally this seems more than sufficient with the wireless system as an additional feed.

That's my take on it.

Regards
Stew
