Intel Says It Will Support Rambus Memory Alternatives on New Pentium Chip
By Mike Yee

Hong Kong, July 26 (Bloomberg) -- Intel Corp. said it will introduce a chipset supporting several types of memory for its upcoming Pentium 4 chip next year.

The world's No.1 chipmaker previously said that it would support only Rambus DRAMs as memory for the upcoming Pentium 4 processor.

``We have discussed with our clients and the responses are that they favor more choices,'' said Evia Shum, a spokeswoman for Intel Asia Pacific.

The company plans to introduce a new chipset for the Pentium 4 that supports synchronous DRAMs next year. Chipsets are semiconductors which link a processor with other parts of a computer such as memory and display.

Another Pentium 4 chipset, which supports only memory chips based on Rambus Inc. designs, will be launched this year.

The company expects the decision would have no adverse impact on sales of processors or chipsets designed for Rambus memories. ``They are targeted at different markets: performance-oriented or mainstream,'' said Shum.
