XML is an upgrade to HTML. Like HTML, it is a language not owned by anyone. The companies that use it and apply these languages properly are the ones that make the rules.
DuPont came out with earnings today, and guided higher costs going forward. One of the reasons, I'm willing to bet, is the overhaul in their information infrastructure. DuPont has already implemented Sequoia's portal throughout their sales channel...now they are overhauling the whole company with this upgraded technology.
Let me say this again, companies and governments that want to get their manufacturers, suppliers, buyers to work together, have to implement XML over HTML. It has NO bearing on whether or not it is owned...does Microsoft own HTML? I think not, these are languages, not products. Once again, it is how you use a technology that defines a company, not whether you have a patent on it.
They aren't a "first mover" either. They might be first in implementing an interactive portal, but there are a few dozen companies that have been pushing this language to get it standardized for some time..I suggest you look at RossettaNet. The consortium that is pushing this envelope.
