LUCENT TECHNOLOGIES AND NEOPOINT ANNOUNCE CDMA 3G COLLABORATION
Companies Conduct First Call Using Commercial NeoPoint Handset via cdma2000-1x Network
Murray Hill, N.J. - Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU) and NeoPoint Inc., a market leader in developing state-of-the-art smartphones and smart information services, today announced that they are collaborating to ensure interoperability for next generation (3G) Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) wireless technology services, and as a first step have demonstrated the first successful voice call with a commercial handset using Lucent’s wireless infrastructure.
The next-generation (3G) technology is based on a globally approved cdma2000-1X standard for enabling today’s CDMA to support more users by delivering twice the current voice capacity and providing peak data transmission rates up to 10 times faster than currently available.
This faster data rate will give mobile phone users the ability to use their handsets to access a range of high-speed, data-rich applications that will include Web browsing, streaming video and audio, Web teleconferencing and other new, emerging data applications. This compares to current North American wireless data networking speeds ranging from 9.6 kilobits per second (kbps) to 14.4 kbps, adequate for text-based messages and information on mobile phones.
“We are pleased to add NeoPoint to the growing roster of companies who are developing new wireless products and services that maximize the full potential of Lucent’s global 3G networks,” said Joe Daly, Lucent’s director of wireless strategic relationships.
“Lucent is building a common platform for converged 3G networks that is fully compatible with today’s cdmaOne infrastructure and handsets,” added Mike Ianodolo, director of product management for Lucent’s CDMA networks. “The increase in voice capacity and faster data transmissions will enable carriers to cost-effectively support quality next-generation services with new consumer appliances while preserving current investment in our Flexent™ CDMA networks.”
“Our relationship with Lucent will enable users to enjoy the benefits of 3G CDMA services including high-speed wireless Internet access for Web browsing and other advanced wireless data services via our NeoPoint smartphones,” said William Son, chairman, CEO and president of NeoPoint. ”We look forward to continue working with Lucent to ensure interoperability of their next-generation (3G) networks via our smartphone devices.”
