GV, re storage area network solutions:
The problem is, there are comparable solutions out there that aren't just 15% less, but 50% less. IBM, CPQ, Hitachi et. al. have tried to steal market share away from EMC by just about making storage a loss leader. It doesn't matter; everyone insists on paying the extra $$ and installing EMC equipment. It's going to take some serious R&D to supplant EMC, not efficient manufacturing. That's why I don't see DELL having great success in this area, it just doesn't play to DELL's strengths
you're right. much depends on the offerings that Dell makes to the market. but, it's not "Dell", nor "efficient manufacturing" in this case (although, those help) that will bite into EMC. it's the technology; the support. "serious R&D", on the Dell side, was already (supposedly) completed by Convergenet. Convergenet, prior to the takeover, stated they were ready to release "revolutionary" SAN products and gave reasons why they believed their products were "revolutionary" compared to others. Dell took it over and its been kept quiet since. Dell states they're ready to compete this year.
So, we either believe Dell, or pooh-poohing by EMC to analysts.
Compare EMC's revenue per employee with Dell's - nearly double. How many carpenters does it take to build their house? |
