Every nations role in the world is unique. America has great power- partly because our corporations have managed to exploit the labor and materials of much of the developing world. By using the spoils of our exploitation we then "help" the rest of the world. And many US citizens fail to see why the rest of the world is not sufficiently "grateful" for all our benevolence.

The British Empire was much the same. All empires are much the same. What they give is what they want to give and what is in their best interest to give, and not necessarily in the best interest of the "aided" country. So we have always and will always be looked on with suspicion and antipathy even as smaller countries and poorer countries take what we offer, because they really have very little choice.

The level of "trust" in our leaders is minimal (imo) and always has been- what matters is opportunism. If a country feels they can use us they do. And we use other countries right back- we don't help countries unless we think it is in our interest. Of course people will mouth the words about trust- but it is meaningless.
