We must be careful how we intend to create critical mass among subscribers. Critical mass implies that enough people have the service that it is often recommended to others, or it is at least the envy of others, such that it creates its own demand. To draw an analogy to criticality in a nuclear reactor, enough neutrons must be created from the fission reaction to cause another fission reaction, and then the process becomes self-sustaining. The anecdotal stories of nightmarish cable modem installs and bad cable modem service are absolute poison to ATHM. Such is the reputation that DSL is now engendering. Good will is not created selling snake oil. No one here is against self-install, we just don't think that it can be accomplished without degradation in service.
