sledgehammer rumor squashed

Found this Drew Prairie interview at AMD Zone:

...

Q7: Lately little has been heard about your SledgeHammer project. Could you share some info with us about how the development of this 8th-generation processor is progressing? What advantages can we expect in this new CPU architecture over your competitors' similar products? And also does the codename come from Peter Gabriel's chart hit from the 80s?:)

A: Sledgehammer is an unannounced product, so I can't supply many details on the processor features etc. We have not accelerated the public timeline for SledgeHammer, so don't expect to see systems this year. What we have said is that SledgeHammer will feature 2 processor die on a singe chip, and that it will feature the x86-64 instruction set. X86-64 is an extension to the current x86 instruction set to enable support for 64 bit operations. Our approach is similar to what was done during the move from 8- to 16-bits and from 16- to 32-bits. We think our approach is the most straightforward approach to 64-bit computing since it does not require developers to toss out all of their x86 knowledge or tools, and also ensures leading performance on the billions of dollars of currently available 32-bit software. Not sure where the codename came from…

Q8: Though few people may know about it, AMD produced multimedia chips also (e.g. the InterWave audio processor) in the past. Have you given up your participation in this segment? Or can we expect AMD to come up with some new audio solution, for example? In my view, with Aureal's sad disappearance from the market, there emerged a rather large gap to fill.

A: Our primary focus right now is on flash memory and microprocessors for desktop PCs, workstations, and servers.

[Oh well, sledge in Q4 '00 sure sounded good, maybe this denial is why we gained a buck AH. Gotta love their continued focus --very important imho]
