Mike Magee replied with about 4 emails.. I'll put them all together...
His response I can paraphrase as this:
-- AMD gave him a call after he wrote the story - which he says was on their initative and unprecedented for them.
AMD on the record said "There is no acceleration on the Sledgehammer roadmap"
--Compaq also emailed him on their own accord, denying any truth to the story.
--His original source on the story insists its true.
--Mike believes he's hit a nerve on Compaq's and AMD's end - or else they wouldnt have bothered calling him... and I quote, "if there was no truth, why would the buggers bother?"
--The source is inside Compaq - AMD still has tight security around the Sledgehammer project that even the Register cant penetrate...

Another direct quote:

"Sometime us hacks call AMD and it takes them weeks to get back to us. I must tell you that it isn't just OEMs that are telling me this, but engineers too. Hey -- I've gone out on a limb -- it's secret squirrel stuff :) AMD says its bollocks. I say AMD is panicking now the story is out..."
Oh.. and an additional quote I was amused at;
"And don't forget I'm a journalist --
Journalism is nothing to do with investment."

:) - Nothing to do with the message but I liked that enough to re-post it - and oh yes.. if you're wondering.. I asked Mike for permission to re-post his email answers to me.

Not trying to start rumours or say I believe Mike or disbelieve him.. just reporting what I found to be interesting.
