SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The shipment of systems with Bluetooth wireless connections will grow to 1.4 billion units by 2005 after the first products begin appearing on the market this year, predicted a new research report from Cahners In-Stat Group.

"The earliest Bluetooth adopters will be high-end mobile phone and notebook PC business users," said analyst Joyce Putscher, director of In-Stat's Consumer & Converging Markets and Technologies Service. The research group said Bluetooth-enabled desktop PCs will debut in 2001 after the first mobile phones and notebook computers appear this fall.

Chip shipments for Bluetooth wireless systems will pick up momentum in the second half of 2000, and by 2005, the semiconductor market opportunity will approach $5 billion, according to In-Stat.
