Tejek re: Sledgehammer where you said:
"Its nothing more then gossip"

Thanks for the reply.. good points.. 1 minor thing..in response to your point where AMD doesnt want other customers like Gateway freaked out over Compaq reportedly issuing Sledgehammer Servers.. the original story does say "Major AMD OEM Customers INCLUDING Compaq.." not exclusively Compaq.. Mike is focusing on Compaq here because thats where the source of his information comes from.. later in the article he says "we understand that product launches from Compaq and other major PC manufacturers who have showed loyalty to AMD and its Athlon product will intro such systems towards the end of this year"

2ndly.. as Mike stated in his email.. the source within Compaq insisted this was the real deal even after all these denials.. I'm a bit puzzled if its gossip why his source is so insistent.. and Mike is putting his neck out over this.

Notice that Mike also says in his email reply that it hasnt just been OEM's saying this to him but engineers.. perhaps an engineer in Compaq is the source? (heh.. now I am speculating)

Anyhow.. perhaps you're right - perhaps Mike has gotten something floated to him from inside Compaq and he's posted it hoping he's hit the motherlode.. I just dont think he would have posted this knowing the waves he would surely cause unless he felt strongly this was a good piece of info from a good source. We'll all find out in Q4 I guess;)

BTW.. in a related story JC has posted this at his site today:

"My old bud Kalaran sent me an interesting note that may actually back up Mike Magee's "Sledgehammer in Q4" story. This is going about half a year back; it's a news post at Ace's which suggests that the Mustang could use an x86-64 core, namely that it might be a tad Sledgehammery."

Apologies for the essay
