But JDS likely will be even bigger, because it hasn't ended its acquisition spree. Earlier this month, JDS said it planned to acquire SDL Inc., another fiber-optic component maker, for about $40 billion.

The SDL acquisition will undergo a prolonged antitrust review, but approval may be more likely as Lucent and Nortel move to make their component divisions more independent, which would give JDS two formidable rivals. Lucent last week announced plans to spin off its microelectronics unit, which includes fiber-optic components, and Nortel is reportedly in talks to sell its component unit to Corning Inc.
