PUYALLUP, Wash.--Microchip Technology Inc. today announced it has completed its $80 million purchase of a wafer-processing facility here from Matsushita Semiconductor Corp. of America.

The facility will be used to increase the production of field-programmable microcontrollers, serial EEPROMs, microperipheral products and secure data chips, said Microchip, which is based in Chandler, Ariz.

Microchip announced plans to buy the facility from Matsushita in late May. It expects the facility to produce ICs with $1.5 billion in annual sales once the fab is operating at full capacity. The installation of wafer fabrication equipment is now slated to begin in November, and volume production will start in August 2001.
