You phrased the anecdote about the English visitor well, I misread it. I was up until 4 a.m. and had a little too much to drink.

Earlier this year, a black bear wandered onto the Baltimore-Washington expressway just north of the Beltway and got hit by a truck, tied up traffic for hours.

But worse than that, I recently read that coyotes are becoming plentiful in the area, and have been spotted out by Dulles airport, just 15 miles west of here.

I suppose that's a good thing, really, for the ecology, but I feel trepidation. I used to ride my bike on the Washington and Old Dominion parkway, a rails-to-trails conversion, that goes all the way out to Purcellville in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I don't suppose a coyote would chase a bicyclist, would it? I know dogs sure do.
