I researched the gaudy question (afterward), and it is likely to come from a version of gaudium, either meaning joy, gaiety, or praise.....You are certainly right about the ellipses, but they are also symmetrical ovals.....I actually recall reading about Jones' problem somewhere, but it is vague..... Maybe this time, aiglet will stick. I know GUI will........
