Re. Dow volatility bar chart:

The chart shows the % of the days that the DOW moves > 2%. Since 1987 you have 4-5 years where 5-8% of the days move > 2% the other 8 years there were less than 5% of days moving that much [several in the 1-2% range].

The only years that stack up to this year [over 15% of days the dow moved > 2% so far] were 1987, 1974, 1929, 30, 34, 37, 38.... with 1931,32,33 being off the chart, all having over 30% of the days with > 2% DOW moves. 1932 saw about 1/2 the days having > 2% Dow moves.
