Peter -

Yes - 95% (my guess) of all semi companies in the bay area - Silicon Valley - can be traced to Fairchild Semiconductor. Fairchild itself was started by seven (?) people who left Shockley Transistor in about 1957.

Two of these guys were Gordon Moore and Robert Noyce. Ever hear of them?

Fairchild was acquired by Schlumberger around 1980 (+/- a year). After pumping a billion dollars into Fairch, Shlumberger bailed out and sold it to National Semi for a couple hundred $million in 1990 or 1991, I believe.
