I was scared of nuclear war from the Cuban Missile Crisis until the Berlin Wall came down. I was in grammar school, they made us wear dog tags with our name and address on it in case of nuclear attack. We had to wear them at all times. I lost it eventually, but I've got a school picture of me wearing mine. We also practiced getting under our desks in case of nuclear attack, because there are no basements in Baton Rouge. I was well aware that this was not an adequate defense to a bomb.

I used to feel fear whenever the radio station I was listening to tested the Emergency Broadcast system. I can still recite it like a mantra:

This is a test.
This is only a test.
If this had been an actual emergency,
you would have been directed to tune your dial
to the nearest Civil Defense station for instructions.
