I too eat of the vegetable. Alas, sterile eggs and hormonally driven milk from "Penal colonies for chickens and cows" also adorn my plate. It gives me great pause.

Respect is what I seek and try to give. If I eat of an animal or use products from it, I recognize its sacrifice is great. I try not to treat the animal with disrespect. Heck, I even rescue spiders and put them outside (being mocked for my weakness).

I've drawn the line at ants and I am sorry to say I've gotten to kill the bastards with utter abandon (using environmentally sound boric acid and sugar). But, like the killer-kayotes we were talking about earlier, they are out of place. Argentine ants (our local pest) are not native. If you leave town, they can't live in the local environs -- too arid and I think the native ants would dine on them anyway. So in that regard they are like lice and rats, living only as a result of our existence and accidental accommodation.
