Nihil, that's a picture a black widow spider, and that's what I saw. We probably disturbed her with our picnic.

Since you are in a research oriented mood, why don't you tell me the kind of snake I saw. It was light brown, maybe three inches thick, and very long, at least five feet long, because I couldn't see its head or its tail when it lay across the path. The place I saw it was maybe 150 feet from the Biloxi Back Bay, which is brackish water, and no more than 20 feet from a small creek that ran through a pine forest.
