why customers would choose them instead of more established companies.
I was wondering that also. I was expecting to see that most of their clientele were universities and national research labs. However only 23% of sales comes from the public sector, "and 77% to significant Fortune 500 industrial companies." I would guess that they mostly do R&D type reactors even for the big commercial guys. It would be a good niche for a small company like CVDE. Especially with things like SiGe and GaN in vogue. Companies like Emcore wouldn't be interested in such custom work. In fact they SELL some stuff to the big equipment makers. From their SDC website: What differentiates SDC from the competition is its’ intimate understanding of the point-of-use process applications, having designed and built process gas panels for the world’s leading semiconductor equipment manufacturers and End Users such as: IBM, Lucent Technologies, Applied Materials, Motorola, Intel, Lam Research, Novellus, SVG, Tokyo Electron, Di-Nippon Screen, The Chinese Ministry of Electronics at Huajing, MRC, Semitool, Emcore, and many more.
Of further interest is that they are trying to increase their exposure through the THT Group: thtgroup.com
Here are CVDE's three divisions: cvdequipment.com stainlessdesign.com equipmentconsulting.com
My take on it is that they don't compete directly with the big guys for production CVD machines. They just go after the R&D custom market, at least with their reactors.
