Nuclear weapons have not been used since the end of WWII, and their use on any grandscale is less likely now than it was 20 years ago (although there is reason to be concerned with smaller scale uses, especially in plutonium bombs). The very terror that they inspire has made them weapons of last resort. Not a bad outcome, I'd say. Plus, there have been no Great Power wars in over 50 years, only brush wars, at least in part due to the fear of escalation. One could make the argument that it was a lucky day when we came up with the Bomb. Certainly, it has worked out pretty well.

But the main flaw with your argument is twofold: if we were that fearsome with nukes, why tempt a confrontation over Eastern Europe or Berlin? and how long did our monopoly last? A couple of years........
