I think that's pretty obvious. Real paranoid. They recognized that we were at odds with their way of life. The Iron Curtain was their security blanket. The division of Europe into spheres of influence was dumb then, and now. What did we expect to happen?

Look at how we handled Red influences in our own country (in the 30's). Their whole system was based upon that system which we were now rejecting vociferously. Some paranoia seems justified on their part. Was Post-Stalin Big-C communism any worse than our Persian or Turkish puppets on matters of civil rights? That's a hard sell.
