chic, if you insist on a serious debate on volume, o.k....it's quite simple, like you said many of the momentum day traders have been wiped out, as have a few big hedge funds. the liquidity they provided is gone. as A. Newman notes, the decline in average volume means that the mania has decelerated, and that it will be a long time before the heights of the bubble will be seen again.

it is most obvious on the speculative bulletin board, where volume soared to eclipse NYSE volume earlier this year and has since completely collapsed.
