NeoPoint Withdraws IPO

WASHINGTON (Reuters) 7/28/2000 - NeoPoint Inc., whose SmartPhones integrate voice, data transmission and Web access services, withdrew on Friday a $75 million initial public offering, saying terms in the market were not favorable.

The La Jolla, Calif.-based company, whose major backers include Siemens AG (SIEGn.DE), the German industrial group, said the IPO would have been a discretionary financing.

``The company does not believe that completing a discretionary financing on potentially unfavorable terms would be in the best interests of the company and its stockholders,'' it said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing.

The IPO was to be handled by Merrill Lynch, Chase H&Q, Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette and U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray.

NeoPoint had applied for a Nasdaq listing under the symbol ''NEOI'' (NasdaqNM:NEOI - news).
