Qualcomm Says It Plans to Introduce Joint Venture on Monday

San Diego, July 28 (Bloomberg) -- Qualcomm Inc., which developed mobile-phone technology used by 65 million people, said it plans to unveil a joint venture on Monday.

Qualcomm Chairman and Chief Executive Irwin Jacobs and his son, Executive Vice President Paul Jacobs, will make the announcement at a news conference at 11:15 a.m. New York time, the company said. It didn't say who else was involved in the venture. Officials weren't immediately available to comment.

Qualcomm formed a joint venture with Microsoft Corp. called Wireless Knowledge Inc. in November 1998. Its software lets users of mobile phones and laptop computers gain access to e-mail and other programs on corporate networks.

On Tuesday, Qualcomm unveiled plans to spin off its business that makes phone chips so the unit could develop semiconductors using standards that compete with Qualcomm's code division multiple access technology. Qualcomm is keeping the business that gets royalties from CDMA licenses and another unit that makes truck-tracking systems.

Shares of San Diego-based Qualcomm fell 3 1/8 to 62 7/16. They've dropped 65 percent this year after surging 27-fold in 1999.
