fwiw, i've appended a recent post #reply-14084213 (to which no one responded or commented on) to read as follows:

******************************

prepare for possible pc catastrophes by regularly copying the following files (you may find only some of these) to a second hard drive, removable hard disk or diskette - especially if you frequently install and uninstall applications. if a software installation fails, it's important to be able to recover by restoring your system to its previous configuration. here are ten files to back up to enable such a recovery...

c:\autoexec.bat
c:\config.sys
c:\msdos.sys
c:\backup\autoexec.dos
c:\backup\config.dos
c:\windows\win.ini
c:\windows\system.ini
c:\windows\control.ini
c:\windows\system.dat
c:\windows\user.dat

*******************************

my question, for anyone, is whether you have the autoexec.dos and/or config.dos files on your hd anyplace besides a c:\backups folder? my info has it that they should be in the c:\ root directory, but they aren't.

anybody?

:)
