To the best of my knowledge, you don't need AUTOEXEC.DOS or CONFIG.DOS at all.

Another thought ...

If you find a 'real' mess on your hands, you system may not even boot. Be prepared: Make you floppy bootable. In the worst case, you could boot with your floppy and use it to fix your system.

P.S. I 'think' and am not really absolutely sure, but *.DOS files are left behind when you install or upgrade Windows. Perhaps someone with a better memory will fill us in here.
