Hi merry - I'd not be surprised if C has a big portfolio, whether it be Capital Market or Venture [a name is just a name!] considering the size of Citigroup. That said, my point is that people should not invest in C b/c of this. It is b/c most pros look at C operating earnings to make the investment decision, spinoff or no spinoff. As a matter of opinion, now and then, I ve argued similar considerations for CDO.

Does that mean CDO [or C, for that matter] investment portfolio does not matter? No, I don't mean that. However, this is only part of the equation. The reason I said this is that incubator/venture type of business model is subjective b/c of its lumpiness and timeliness. That is why CMGI [no position] and SFE [long - my mistake :)] etc etc can be very hot or very cold depending on the moment. The downside risk is much greater.
