Alan,
I think Allen Benn did some interesting speculating about that in #7706. The spin off of SPINCO will permit them cross license with GSM IPR holders, without QCOM losing its ability to collect royalties. This means that multi-mode and multi-band hand set will be coming where a an high availability operating system might be needed. In addition, QCOM will have reference designs for handset with both Palm-type, Windows, and NT operating systems. Moreover, the division of data from voice in using dynamic allocation of 1.25 mghz bands might be facilitated by VxWorks. Then, there is QCOM move from Omnitracs into the automarket that could prove to be fertile ground.
Just speculating, my grasp of these technologies is rudimentary, but it is easy to see many possibilities arising from the increased complexity of consumer Internet appliances, then there is the whole world of wireless Internet and switched packet networks.
I hope this helps someone take these ideas further.
Don
