Commentary by John Murphy: "Another July Peak?"

>>>Posted 28 July 2000

Period of Seasonal Strength Ends
Although seasonal trends aren't our primary concern, we do pay attention to them -- especially when they seem to agree with our price charts. That's why we think it's worth repeating that most of the summer rallies normally take place during July. After that, seasonal trends turn negative from August until November.

The primary source of our seasonal data is Yale Hirsch's "Stock Traders Almanac". However, recent chart history supports the idea of July tops.

Previous July Tops
The chart above shows that the last two market peaks took place during July 1998 and July 1999 (and, most likely, July 00). The chart also shows that the market remained on the defensive for the following three months -- or until October.

There's no guarantee these seasonal tendencies will repeat themselves this year. But they've worked pretty well so far during year 2000.<<<
