The genius of Spinco
I agree that from a technical standpoint Spinco is a "crock". The creation of Spinco is a move on the chess board to counteract WCDMA. Just as WCDMA was created in a board room to thwart the implementation of CDMA, the creation of Spinco matches that move and creates checkmate. Spinco allows Qualcomm to play the WCDMA game without allowing access to key essential patents. I see it as one step backwards and two steps forward. Spinco will get access to the European markets like a Trojan Horse. I would not be surprised if a WCDMA chip, with the technical parameters we know today, never goes into production. After all, we know it is not as efficient and has many practical limitations. Spinco is largely a political and diplomatic decision to position Qualcomm in the advantage sooner than if the Europeans pursue their Edge and GPRS nonsense. We were all expecting the Europeans to come to their senses and deploy the better technology, but that was not going to happen soon enough.
From a stock standpoint Qualcomm will be much more than a royalty machine. They will at least keep Digital Cinema and Wireless Knowledge, there are likely to be many more "killer apps". This revolution has just begun! This spin off has created value in the parts which are greater than the whole. As a stock holder we have seen the value chain broaden. The only way we lose is that if we sell Spinco. The company has split, not our value. The bottom line is that Qualcomm's CDMA will get to market much faster.
