The adoption of the HDD, which jacks-up the component cost considerably, is a clear sign that Microsoft believes that the real money is in network services. Why MS chose DDR SDRAM. With both main memory and frame buffer accessed in the same DRAM, the X-Box will have to offer a data transfer rate that is high enough. This is why Microsoft has tapped double-data rate (DDR) mode synchronous DRAM, running at 200MHz, for the X-Box.
