Rick, Can't help you with the why, but the history is PacBell chose CDMA when they went digital. This was then spun-off as Airtouch along with the analog and overseas assets. They then bid on the PCS spectrum and started from scratch with GSM. Maybe engineer knows something about the why. Cooters
