Ted,

The period of major earthquakes is about 200-250 years in LA, and 100-150 years in SF.

There hasn't been a large earthquake in an urban area in CA. since 1906, though there were a few medium sized quakes that did some damage (like Loma Prieta in 1989 and Northridge.)
