'Permanent' Artificial Heart Implanted

news.bbc.co.uk

Surgeons in Israel have carried out what they
hope will be the first successful implant of a
permanent artificial heart.

The operation was carried out on a 64-year-old
Israeli man with serious heart disease at the
Shiba Tel-Hashomer hospital in Tel Aviv.

If it succeeds it could dramatically increase the
number of heart transplants carried out around
the world, currently restricted by the number of
available organs.

A miniaturised metal device, weighing 350
grammes (10.25 ounces), was placed in the
patient's body during an operation lasting 14
hours, the hospital said.

He remained in intensive care on Sunday, in what
the hospital described as a "critical but stable"
condition.

No alternative

Because of other complications the man was
unable to receive a conventional heart
transplant, leaving little alternative to this
procedure.

The surgeons implanted a new type of
American-built artificial heart, called the
HeartMate 2, that sits in the body alongside the
existing heart.

For the moment it is powered by an external
battery, but eventually a tiny battery may also be
implanted enabling the man to live an almost a
normal life.

The device was developed in the US at Pittsburg
University, but the American authorities were
reluctant to approve its use until it had already
been shown to work elsewhere.
