M2,
In case you or a friend are thinking about a new computer, the following may be of interest.

Dear Fellow Pennsylvanian:
Making Pennsylvania a technology leader is the single most important action we can take to ensure Pennsylvania's long-term prosperity. And if Pennsylvania truly is to become a global technology leader, then Pennsylvanians need to be technology leaders. And you can't do that without a PC.

That's why we're giving Pennsylvanians the chance to buy a 'Tax-Free PC.' It will help our families to bring technology into their lives. And it will help Pennsylvania to become a global technology leader. Other states have tried a sales-tax holiday on clothing -- and it's been successful. Of course, our clothing already is tax free. So we want to go a different way.

It's so important for our children to have access to computers at a young age, where they can learn the skills that will carry them into the technology-driven workforce of the 21st century. And we want their parents and grandparents to feel comfortable using computers, too, so they also can enjoy the benefits of being online.

That means we need to do a better job of getting computers into their homes. But we also know that computers are big-ticket items. They're not cheap. The average cost of a new computer and related equipment is nearly $1,800. So this tax cut will save our consumer more than $100 on that purchase. Plus, we're working with our retailers to create additional sales at the time of the tax holiday so consumers can save a lot more.

So I encourage all Pennsylvanians who have thought about buying a home computer to take advantage of the Tax-Free PC week. It starts August 6 and ends August 13 - just in time for back to school. Don't miss it!

With warm regards, I am

Yours truly,
TOM RIDGE
