The answer is easy!
Answer: Me! I will buy it!
I would love to own the only original CD of the next Barbara Streisand album.
I will probably have to pay a lot of money for it. And that answers the part of the question as to why the artist/recording company would want to sell one CD!
Now do you think I will then let somebody copy it for free? No way! Not after I spent all that money for that only CD in existence.
So what will I do with it? I will make 3 and only 3 copies of it. I will sell each one for 1/2 the price I paid for mine. They will be quite valuable as well, because there are only 4 in existence! And I have made a quick 50% profit.
Now do you think the buyers will let people copy it for free. I think not! They spent a handsome sum for their copy. But each of them will now make only 3 copies and sell those copies for 1/2 of what they paid for their own copy. Well you can see where this is going, can't you? This just keeps going on until eventually the price has fallen so low the new buyer won't mind if somebody copies it from him for free.
At this point, everybody has been paid, everybody has profit except the one guy who now lets people copy it for free. And what the heck, it only cost him a dollar and a half and he feels good about himself. Heck, I'll even send him a couple of bucks myself, now we all made money! No need to fuss with lawyers, SD MMC cards, restrictive software etc. Another problem solved. ‹(•¿•)›
Now I still have only one un-answered question. What is a SD MMC actually used for today? And how is it used?
