I actually met L. Sprague de Camp, once. I had a friend who was a fanatic about sci- fi and sword and sorcery, and he talked me into going to a big convention at the old Hotel Commodore, atop Grand Central Station in NYC. We had little money, but he said that we could always find a spot on someone's floor to flop. I was eighteen, and too easily persuadable. Anyway, I was not truly a sci- fi afficianado, and had hardly touched sword and sorcery, but I was game. Mr. de Camp was circulating among the crowd, and apparently my friend knew him from other conventions, so we stopped and spoke briefly. I also met Harlan Ellison and a handful of others..........
