"What is a SD MMC card actually used for today?" I'm not sure that any are in use, yet. But if they were in use, they would certainly make it easier for you to buy that one and only one CD copy. You have described perfectly one of the center arguments of information theory; namely, that the more publicized information becomes, the less value it retains. The originator of proprietary information is entitled to a reasonable return for information (e.g., music) that the public finds attractive. Whether the originator wants the return in the form of a one-time payment by someone like you, or in the form of a nominal fee from anyone who accesses the information ought to be decided by the originator. The SD MMC system would be able to make the ultimate destination (and cost) of information transfer manageable.
