TV is like any other medium. You have to view the content presented using it as a data point amongst many. I like the oft-cited triad of fast, good, and cheap. Choose any two. If it is too easy to access, and too cheap, it might not be very good.

My favorite source is Scientific American. I pretty much consider them a journal-lite. The stories there are very good and surprisingly don't just limit them to pure science. Two months ago they had a great social policy story about the effects of war-zone violence on children. They've also had good articles on demographic changes and cutting edge psychological findings.

I like the watching the Discovery Channel too, but often they lean toward the sensational. I can't blame them, it is a commercial venture.

TV is a really a pretty good mirror of current popular culture and the direction of that culture. Not necessarily the actual culture (due to the distortions) but maybe where we're heading...
