Hardened OS eyes high availability
techweb.com
Found this WIND article on OS availability.

I had a listen to the Qualcomm/Ford webcast. Here are a few points I picked up.

1. The Wingcast system will use a thin client/sever ASP scheme.

2. The design cycle for cars is 3-4 years but the design cycle for electronics is much shorter (Moore's law). The design cycle for cars becomes a limiting factor. By this I mean that a system installed in the car will have to have a useful life of quite a number of years.

In order to decouple the design cycle of cars from that of the electronics, the system is designed to be software (and hardware ?) upgradable. (At least that's the way I interpreted it).

3. The user interface will tend to be voice or touch screen. The look of the interface will be highly customisable depending on the type of car and brand of car.

A job for Cirrus ? Note: The CEO of Wingcast is ex-Microsoft, make of that what you want.

Regards
JC.
