And Bill, even though there are others following EMC's lead in establishing enterprise storage as a network service, EMC departs from the rest of the pack, which generally make trade-offs between costs and heavy reliance on one network transport mechanism like IP. Celerra, which adheres to EMC's architectural philosophy of robust enclosures containing highly scaleable nodes, is one example of this fault-tolerant mindset. EMC Data Manager (EDM) is another example of EMC's commitment to universal connectivity. The network implementation of EDM enables separate control and data paths from the EDM client, enabling parallel data movement. The EDM client component formats the data for backup and restore, retries busy files, and allows client-initiated restore capability through the interface.
