According to Tom, the part runs at 850 MHz without the microcode update.

If the part requires a microcode update to run at 1.1GHz, that would imply that there is a speedpath which is being bypassed by the new microcode. The explanation sounds reasonable. Has Intel denied Tom's explanation?
